The 'opposite carriageway' is interesting. Certainly if you see the air ambo overhead you can reasonably expect that traffic in both directions will be halted.

Trumpton seemed to send onto both carriageways just in case the location was wrong carriageway.
They seemed to send as many appliances as they could crew. Maybe this was how the retained guys got paid.
Yes both sides held for an helicopter. Also, both sides held for offloading horses, (pony girls' horse transporters always seemed to be old G or H reg sheds).

Starting fires. Apparently not unknown amongst fire fighters although, luckily, not common.
