I did a mega journey at the weekend to get car parts. There was trouble on the M42 due to someone clobbering the central reservation earlier in the day so they'd shut off both outside lanes. Sensibly as a managed motorway they had the "hard shoulder" lane open and I was using it as knew eventually outside lane and middle lanes would snarl up as we approached the lane closure.
I think it was junction 3 or 4 but the sign for lane 1 "hard shoulder" changed to being just for the junction only so traffic was heading into the other (static) lanes leaving a good 1/2 mile of clear lane - so I nipped down it, up to the roundabout at the top, and down the slip road the other side....
I did feel a bit guilty though. Perhaps it was because I was in a white van
What is my punishment, 10 hail constables and a bloody mary or something?
perfectly legal, but still felt guilty.

Surely it's just application of good observation and anticipation?
However, if all displayed such?

Yes, and gaining perhaps 5 to 10 minutes on my journey for 30 seconds effort was not the primary thought? Oooh, there's a flying pig!

Yes I know what you mean. I do something similarly 'naughty' at a roundabout near me...I approach in lane 2 (arrowed as right turn only) overtaking lots of queued traffic but go straight on (second exit) as I know their are 2 lanes on the exit as well. I'm fully prepared to abort and go all the way round if necessary but careful timing means I'm not alongside anyone else and it's never been a problem up to now. Still feel slightly guilty though.

Would the same apply here do you think? This is at Arundel in Sussex and the A27 westbound is just one lane and there is often a long queue of vehicles.
If there is a slow moving vehicle at the head of the A27 lane it is easy (though not popular) to get ahead by using the A284 lane on approach.

Or even better, approach in lane 2, arrowed as right turn, overtaking lots of queued traffic in lane 1, but go completely around the roundabout, passing your initial entry, then taking the left turn exit.
