Hard to say. ;) The trouble is riding at #2 the rider at #1 does influence your position and decision making. It also depends how regularly you ride together.

As a guide, it's 'staggered' ie 1 3 1 3 on a straight and in-line through bends (with good separation).

That's true. There's also an element of lag looking at where the rider behind is in the video.

When riding at #2, #3 etc. the positioning of the rider ahead is also information to use in your riding plan and position decisions. Just as you can use a car ahead to 'sweep the road' for you.

Brilliantly executed for clarity, I love the way you slow it down and explain what is happening with the limit point marked. However, I don't quite agree with 'precise use of the throttle allows us to keep the distance to the limit point constant ..... '

If the bend radius changes the distance to the limit point changes. I think the purpose of precise use of the throttle is to maintain a speed from which we could stop in distance we can see to be clear. The distance to the limit point only remains constant while the limit point is matched on a constant radius bend.

For me, if you are in a responsive gear small additions/subtractions of throttle allow you to keep the limit point at a constant distance through the bend where it is varying slightly (and maybe you are having to adjust position slightly due to the road surface). If the bend 'suddenly' tightens up (as mentioned at the end) then we can restart the system, close the throttle fully and optionally add some brakes before the 2nd part of the bend.

One thing I missed from reply, on a motorcycle you are rarely scribing the exact same arc as the radius of the bend all the way round, and also the gearing of the bike varies with lean angle, so fine/precise adjustments are fairly normal as you progress through the bend.

If that doesn't make sense to anyone, it's because the circumference at the contact point varies as the tyre (bike) is leant over.

It's been a while since I posted a video. Here's my latest, warts 'n' all production. It shows me riding in the January rain of the UK winter. Smooth positioning is vital, no sudden moves. The footage contains a mixture of live commentary and overdubs added during editing.
