I may have to pop down to Hungerford to see if there is a real cow issue. Went to Marlborough and Avebury last week and it snowed ....

Just a different definition of field, I suppose.

Just a few miles further east from Hungerford Common is Greenham Common, famous for missiles and protests, and which also has cattle roaming freely and sometimes on the adjacent road. But nowadays it's open access (the runways were torn up and used as foundations for the Newbury bypass (did I mention protests?). But all through the time it was an airbase, even hyper-secure when the USAF were there, commoners' rights were never extinguished. So, every year, a group of commoners took cattle onto the base.

And if that's not true, it really should be.

The problem is, the driver in front often then gets confused about why you haven't overtaken, or assumes you don't want to and can then make life harder for you.
