So how does he explain to Associates why they have to do everything legal, while having an illegal number plate?

Yes, seriously.
Amusing but on a serious note ... those 17-24 year olds being targeted see no difference between illegal plates, blacked out side windows, dodgy cambers, wrong sized tyres, rally grade headlights ... shall I go on?

I suspect most people could easily be helped to understand the difference between safety-related issues like those, and vanity / administrative issues like the mis-spaced plate.

It's been quite common for years for police to prosecute motorcyclists for too-small plates.
A friend was done, after officers checked at one meeting point then radio'd ahead which bikes should be pulled in and stopped!
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

It's something we have to cover regularly. Small plates, loud exhausts, silly little indicators, dark visors, etc. Just remind them their examiner may be a serving plod ... though maybe we won't have to now in the brave new world.

Huge difference between bikes with tiny plates which are unreadable from a distance (and from anpr cameras) vs a bit of creative spacing which is still perfectly readable from the same distance as a regulation plate too...

You are all missing the point ... it is illegal. Wrong spacing as well as missing the makers info etc.
You can not be selective about which bits of your vehicle are legal.

Well said, I thought it was just me being grumpy about it. If the law is an ass, change the law, don't be selective about which bits get enforced, particular if that's your day job

I'm not missing the point, I know it's illegal, but I'm going to bow out of the discussion on his number plate as I'm far more interested in John's driving skill rather than 10mm of plastic.
I was just trying to show the event in a good light by sharing some photos, next time be more careful about what I post
