LastPass alternative?

Postby crr003 » Wed Feb 17, 2021 11:51 am

Any advice for a free password manager?
Needs to work with iOS and Windows devices.
Is Bitwarden reasonable?

 Have you been reading SELOC? I asked the same question last night.

I pay for dropbox anyway, so I'm looking at their offering. No guarantee bitwarden won't go down the same route - I'm sure they've worked out why their traffic is off the scale today.

Bitwarden was suggested by a few folk over there with an easy migration:

No - I got the LastPass email yesterday with the bad news. For 27USD it would be easier to pay them, but it rankles.

tbh, I think it's been inevitable since logmein bought them. It's also possible there will be a backlash over the next couple of weeks and they backtrack. For instance 1 mobile device + desktop would suit me.

Any free service you're ultimately at risk of it being chargeable, especially if there's no other obvious monetisation such as adverts.

I use Keepass. KeepassX on the Mac, KyPass on the iPhone and iPad. The KDB (password database file) is stored in my Dropbox account but you could use any other cloud file storage.

This way I keep a consistent copy of the file irrespective of which device I use.

KyPass - https://www.kyuran.be/software/kypass/

Kaspersky offer their password manager for free if you subscribe to their antivirus.

Used to get Kaspersky (antivirus) for free with Barclays, but for some reason they stopped giving it.

I've always found the idea of holding my passwords with a 3rd party, protected by a password, a bit odd.

The benefit is you can have a different password for every site so when one site is compromised, it doesn't affect any other passwords. If you can remember a secure password for every website you access, good luck to you!

See whether you've been compromised here: https://haveibeenpwned.com/ (yes, despite the URL it's legit).

I don't put any "important" passwords in a manager, but I do use it for forums, shopping etc etc. And the manager itself is protected by a significantly more complex password than I would be able to remember for many websites, but there's only 1.

I use 1Password, but not the subscription service.

It syncs nicely between phone and 3 Macs with the data file stored locally on each device and using iCloud for sync. The sync could just as easily be done through DropBox should I prefer that.

The OS integration for AutoFilling is excellent.

Having been using it for years, I was pissed off when they switched to a subscription model but just about everyone is going that way now so it is increasingly hard to find alternatives. If I wanted to switch I think it would probably be to EnPass as the closest to 1Password look/feel/functionality.
