Good luck with that in the UK. Most are overgrown, covered in road dirt / algae or have been nicked/defaced.

If this becomes widely adopted and works well, does that mean we can get rid of all the shitty buffer zones tacked onto villages/towns, since the car will slow people down as they reach the real [potential] hazards?

I was in a Volvo a few years ago with speed sign recognition. It picked up the signs beautifully. The driver, even with that assistance, less so...
