Self-driving cars

Postby Triquet » Wed Apr 28, 2021 6:26 am

If the Daily Telegraph is to be believed self-driving cars will be allowed on motorways subject to a maximum speed limit of 37 mph. That sounds like an ill-though out recipe for disaster as somebody ends up with an HGV up the bum :soap:

Audi called this traffic jam pilot.

Should be fine on the M25.

The bigest worry for me is the 10s handback - most manufacturers have backpedalled from L3 ADAS because you can't reliably make this work. Maybe at 37mph 10s is enough to expect even the most distrated driver to wake up and pay attention. But as Tesla repeatedly find, you shouldn't underestimate the creative ways idiots can find to test these systems.

The 60 kph limit seems in conflict with the sort of roads on which this might otherwise work. And even at that speed 10 seconds to take over means the system has to spot problem situations at least 200 yards ahead. Happily it seems they are still consulting.

That's fine if they want to commit suicide. I'm less enthused about sharing the roads with them. I'm pretty sure the geneva convention has some sections about weapons testing on unsuspecting civilians.

There are quite enough problems with people driving around Occupied Northe Berkshire at 37 mph everywhere without them spilling onto the motorways.
