That’s the Yaris: keep fit windows, manual mirrors, no central locking.

Older cars are certainly more simple and no doubt about that; our now departed MX5 (sold not dead) was one of the finest with nothing it didn't really need.
I am lucky enough to be able to drive a selection of new cars and I do enjoy it. The latest auto boxes I am a fan of and the added safety and security does help. The vast majority are sure footed and feel safe with most having ample power to do the job (I like cars with just enough power not excessive amounts).
The guarantees offered are getting longer as well, perhaps they need to? The first VW I owned from new had a six month warrantee but needed a much longer one.
As with most things it's a mixed bag.

I drove my first DSG auto some years ago and since then driven a number of cars with it. Very impressed and now own a car with this box. My love of this system grows. The only thing I miss is heel n toe. However left foot braking is replacing this skill. I would always look for DSG in any car I purchase in the future, something I thought I would never say.

I wondered, years ago, about the march of technology when I heard about a car (BMW 7?) that had motors to pull the wipers against the screen at high speed.

And I wonder about anyone trying, in years to come, to restore a modern vehicle.

That said, vehicles, compared with just a few decades ago, are incredibly reliable and long-lived, especially given power output from newer smaller engines.

I can't think of many new cars with sufficient character for anyone to want to bother trying.

That is exactly why I still keep the Micra (nothing out there to tempt me)
