FYI this is on the border between Hampshire and Surrey. Both their online reporting tools say the other is responsible ...

Roundabout peep & creep?

When I think about, I've always thought that having decided to enter a roundabout it's generally best to be brisk about, to just get on with it. Over the weekend I found myself in an uncomfortable situation at a roundabout I've joined many times in the past; there was almost no view to the right, an...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

Does anybody think they enter bends too quickly? I did. At one time our stressed friend did. In my case probably coming from an excess of exuberance and optimism, coupled with not paying enough attention to the important thing of the moment. I knew it from having to untidily fix it up, and from wif...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

I believe it takes further development as a driver to have the capacity to switch on and off different styles. While I agree with that, so far as styles of driving is concerned, I think our stressed friend would often talk about the difference between people who do something all the time versus tho...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

One of my lines is that for you to be called Advanced, you have to demonstrate that you can maintain safety and smoothness when you are taking your spouse to A&E/late for a meeting etc . I took it to mean that would be 'special occasions' driving - i.e. not all drives, everywhere or anywhere. W...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

having completed the course, how I can choose to drive in two different ways, one more progressive, but maintaining the same level of safety. This is a bit like assigning a characteristic to a group without accepting that it's a gross simplification. - Extended thinking and braking distances As the...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

I'm suggesting that if you erode safety margins then it's going to result in increased risk . You appear to be suggesting that faster means safety margins are eroded. As suggested earlier, the end result of that line of thinking is a person walking in front with a red flag. Where do you draw the li...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

You might 'gain', but those (as listed by Gareth) - even cumulative - are likely to be small reductions in time for the journey. I think, if consistently applied, we might reasonably expect they are cumulative. If they're done in conjunction with driving up to the speed limit where safe to do so , ...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

when people are anxious or flustered from feeling the pressure of time, their attention and roadcraft often goes to pot. People who still drive/ride well, safely, in such circumstances are clearly more advanced than those who don't. If that's what the IAM cover, then fair enough :) I tell my associ...

Re: Has IAM Roadsmart given up on advanced training?

I think I've read you mention this "stopping at roundabouts" thing before. No one teaches to stop first and look second. I know you qualified the point however, if you are with a learner in a car without dual controls, the first thing you probably want them to be able to do is to stop at ...
