It's possible they actually thought what they said, then when the unexpected circumstance arrived, they found they thought differently.

What is your position if the reports of the move to a European super-state [thenews.pl, source is 'TVP Info' Polish news website] prove to be well founded?

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

I've seen it in Spain where today, 80 years after the Civil War ended, there are people who will not talk to one another. It is responsible for the virtual silence you get in many public places such as trains and aircraft; you don't open the conversation because you never know where it is going to ...

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

In the future the money that was given to these areas will have to come from somewhere. As has already been mentioned, part of the UK contribution to the EU is where the money comes from. The main difference, post-exit, will be that the UK government will choose how that money is spent, instead of ...

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

some of them voted to bite the hand that has been feeding. I'd be interested to know what proportion of wealth redistribution in the UK is caused by internal versus external mechanisms. My initial feeling is that the amount the UK has sent to the EU and which is then returned to the poorer areas is...

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

I think it would be a mistake to assume that individuals were wholly for staying in the European Union, or wholly for leaving it. Nearly everyone I've discussed this with has been seen good and bad points for staying, good and bad points for leaving, then made their decision by weighing them up.

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

..Which, inevitably, leads to higher unemployment, and bigger benefits bills, unless our workers migrate elsewhere in search of jobs in their turn. Neither inevitable or particularly correct. I was wondering why you think this. Are you suggesting that people coming to work in the UK only take jobs ...

Agreed, but pressure on housing pushes rents up as well, hitting the worst off hardest.

Re: The EU - Leave or Remain?

Manifestos aren't worth the paper they are written on. I see them as a way to communicate the values, desires, hopes and aims of political parties. When a party isn't in power, it's probably difficult for them to work out what is actually feasible, so it's more likely their manifesto pledges turn o...

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

So, in short, it's all them immigrants innit. In one sense, I think the rapid influx is the problem but, really, I see that as a result of earlier failures, both in the UK and within the EU. Perhaps the only difference is that this time we've not necessarily need to import that labour in the first ...
