Re: ADAS testing

Possibly a vote in favour of ADAS…. For many years, or decades, I’ve been resigned to the fact that when I slow down for hazards such as pedestrians, or a queue of stationary traffic in the oncoming lane, or even just a speed limit sign, the car behind will often fail to do likewise, leading to unpl...

Re: Lighting...

Regarding lamps that are too close together, my own biggest gripe is DRLs that are pretty much integrated with indicators, rendering the indicators barely noticeable. Presumably to combat the invisible indicators some cars seem to dim the front DRL in order to illuminate the indicator which I find v...

Re: Lighting...

My dislike of rear fogs is based largely on my theory that, by creating a sense of security, they encourage traffic to move at a faster speed than is sometimes safe. The object I’m about to hit might for example be a fallen tree and, despite the lack of rear fogs on the tree, I’d like to be driving ...

Re: Lighting...

On a more positive note re lighting, I do get the impression that misuse of rear fog lights, ie lit when they shouldn’t be lit, is on the decline vs 20 years ago? I wonder if that might be an upside of automatic lights, assuming that it never, ever turns on the fogs. Which in my estimation, is about...

Re: Lighting...

Ref what the Volvo driver might have done… Speaking just for myself, there are times when a sixth sense seems to kick in, such as when a driver suddenly pulls across in front of other traffic to exit a roundabout. I might then mention to passengers that “I just knew he was going to do that”. I suspe...

Re: Lighting...

But your mate was blameless even though he didn't know or acknowledge the actual meaning and didn't check for anything like the Volvo slowing as well? It only takes 3-4 seconds to clear a lane, so how close was the Volvo? Your mate is very trusting ... Didn’t mean to suggest my mate was blameless. ...

Re: Lighting...

When Pioneering pioneered DRLs, and until the noughties, Volvo* it included dipped headlamps and lit tail lights, which satisfied legal requirements for poor weather driving. Now that DRLs have become mainstream (including Volvos), they seem to have been dumbed down. In particular, why don’t they in...

Re: The Silence

There still a lot of people still hiding under the blankets. With entirely justifiable* reason, I popped into a Reading pub on my own, for a quick pint at about 4pm yesterday. Pre-covid, that pub would have been heaving with people on a Friday afternoon. On arrival, I was the only customer. *justif...
