Re: IAM forget motorcycles again

Finally! IAMRoadsmart has produced something sensible for motorcyclists. The charity proposes airbag jackets should be exempt from VAT like helmets: https://www.iamroadsmart.com/media-policy/media-enquiries/news-details/2023/08/08/i-wouldn-t-be-alive-today-without-my-air-jacket-how-axing-vat-from-a-...

What's wrong with standing up? Was it frowned upon in Hendon?

I can only speak as a motorcyclist, and a wheelie is the correct response

Re: Driving to the conditions?

Do you think that this judgement might have implications for candidates on 'L' or advanced tests? Perhaps some recalibration of 'safe' progress? “Making progress” on advanced tests – not least the finely judged overtakes that can help influence gaining higher grades – is increasingly at odds with t...

Re: Driver Instructor 'teaching' cycling

What are his cycling qualifications? Is he a Bikeability-certified instructor? I didn’t have the strength to watch this video, as he can come across as a know-it-all. And don’t get me started on his pronouncements about what is and isn’t safe in motorcycling, considering he hasn’t got a bike licence...

The revised Highway Code and road user hierarchy are going well, then

Has anything changed in reality?

Re: High-Performance Award for bike clobber

[devilsadvocate mode=on] The trouble is with all safety standards, they start off as a no brainer, sensible idea and quickly descend to this being required by some ;) I thought the same but was wrong. It transpires quality of materials trumps weight, which is where test results are very revealing. ...

Re: High-Performance Award for bike clobber

With AA, testing in Zone 1 is conducted at 70kph/43.5mph. Originally, however, the AA settings were 75kph/46.6kph, but these were reduced to the lower setting when it was discovered materials in common use in motorcycling garments could not withstand the 75kph starting point, but passed at 70kph. L...

Re: High-Performance Award for bike clobber

[mode=devilsadvocate] Clothing choice is personal, and nobody's suggesting otherwise. However, the new Gold/Platinum/Diamond ratings solve several problems: • You can pass the AAA test with gear that provides only around a second (1.3s) of abrasion resistance on a typical British road surface. • If...

High-Performance Award for bike clobber

Considering how many manufacturers have blocked better standards for motorcycle clothing, I was delighted Bennetts took the initiative to encourage higher safety standards with its new High-Performance Awards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QcWajVTfB4 Could the IAM and RoSPA endorse it? There’s be...
