Re: Pavement Parking
You are aware that the government defines a particular density of housing in new estates aren't you and that 1 space per bedroom could not possibly tally with that density. And I think you'll find that companies these days are forced by the planners to provide sufficient car parking spaces as part o...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?
The only way to get a better lap time with the same amount of power is stickier tyres and the suspension optimised for those stickier tyres. Not a lighter wheel/tyre combination? Hence the comments about suspension optimised. Unsprung mass is far less of an issue than people think and mostly concer...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?
Top Gear did an episode where they tried to get a Renault . . . err . . . thing (the two-door executive saloon jobbie, 'Avatar', 'Avantine', 'Avaniceday' or summat) to go faster around their track. IIRC most of what they did slowed it down, including 'better' wheels and tyres. I think you mean the ...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?
As for air pressure, I find that because of the steel casing in radial tyres nowadays, it takes a highly exaggerated pressure to actually lift the edges of the tread, so small modulations to air pressure have more to do with how stiff the tyre is rather than how big the contact patch is when static...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?
If only it were that simple... because you're not just looking at a balloon, but a balloon fixed to a stiff belt of metal & rubber, the pressure effects are a bit interesting - too much and the edges of the tread lift clear, too little and the centre lifts clear. While force over area has to bal...

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?
Ignoring the marketing reasons (which probably add to the 'how many inches' have I got argument, the main reason for Low profile tyres is that higher profile tyres won't work within the necessary parameters today. Tyre widths have significantly increased over the last 15 years to give a bigger conta...

Re: Anyone for a Tesla 3?
Provided a) you're near a supercharger station and thus taking a boring route (after all you can fill your ST pretty much anywhere) and b) you don't drive spiritedly with lots of acceleration c/f braking phases. The original Tesla cars based on a Lotus Elise in drag has this particular issue.

Re: Anyone for a Tesla 3?
I didn't think that article was particularly biased although any journalist should have been able to realise the difference between total emissions and city emissions. The pollution would be dependent in any case on the profile of power generation methods. Those predicting the rise of the electric c...

Re: Winter to summer tires
As for contributing 'negative or sniping comments', I don't think silk is any more guilty than I am. Maybe I ought to grow up, too: but it's getting a bit late for that. There is a difference: your contributions are frequently amusing; those of silk are usually of an unpleasant sniping nature...

Re: Winter to summer tires
Age cracking is even less of an indicator in the UK - we get a fair bit less sun than Israel and less UV as a result.
