Re: End of 20mph growth?
You used the term 'safely'. It's undeniable that travelling faster extends reaction time and can substantially extend braking distances. Traveling faster is a compromise. Rarely, for most drivers, are journeys time critical. Hmmm, we're back to should the car have airbags or a spike in the steering...

Re: End of 20mph growth?
I've just done a 14 minute cross-town (Newbury) journey. A mix of 30 & 40 limits. Probably able to travel up to the limit for a third of each. But with the variety of junctions and side turnings, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings (zebras, light controlled, central islands), a school, refuse bin...

Re: End of 20mph growth?
The trouble with having a mobile phone interlock it will affect the popular navigation apps, and maybe also affect built-in satnavs. Would be trivial for the phone OSes to go "oh, you're docked to a car, sorry, no social meejda for you". I think Apple phones do actually have a driving mod...

Re: End of 20mph growth?
Where's the data on how many breathalyser tests were conducted? To pick one point and 30 seconds on Google: https://www.directlinegroup.co.uk/en/news/brand-news/2024/drink-driving--55-per-cent-increase-in-positive-and-refused-test.html Police conducted 58 per cent fewer breath tests in 2022 (latest...

Re: End of 20mph growth?
I'd like to see some data about what would happen if we had a massive campaign against distracted/lazy drivers - you know, the MLMs, the ones on their phones etc etc. And then if we got drivers to pay attention (or took them off the road if they're not actually prepared to, well, drive), we could e...

Re: End of 20mph growth?
I've chopped out a fair chunk of both your and my posts to keep this short(er). But kept the 'celebrating' but because possibly yes (but don't hold your breath) ... Reducing speed limits to 20mph could reduce annual policy costs for drivers, according to a leading insurance firm. esure says the ave...

Not "Deliberate speeding"
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwywjjv4xz5o I'm not sure I see how being so unaware of your speed that you're 40mph over the limit isn't DWDCA.... Then again, given "District Judge Magill said in "normal circumstances" he would give Moron a £65 fine and three penalty points, but ...

Re: Need to change my email address
I think it will have to be Alasdair. I've just tried in the admin panel and have the same restriction you do. I imagine it's an anti-spammer thing.

Re: Community Speed Watch
Although, RoSPA say: "20mph limits ... have generally been positive at reducing traffic speeds" & "Evidence shows that 20mph zones are an effective way of preventing injuries on the road." However, I don't know whether the data shows what vehicle speeds those collisions occu...

Re: Community Speed Watch
More likely, the villagers from next settlement up the road. It’s always “the others” that are to blame. We live in a 0.3 mile straight, level, residential road. Parked cars both on- and off-road (usually front in), kids, cats ... A suggestion popped up on the WhatsApp group that we should as...
