Re: Bad expert analysis
Reflecting on it and the replies here I think SD and Astraist raise some good points in that in may well be bad journalism not bad expert analysis. If it is only a partial quote of the AI then what they actually said might well have given a more balanced and nuanced picture. I wouldn't mind betting ...

Bad expert analysis
My blood pressure began to rise today as I was browsing the website of our local rag today. I was reading about a fatal road accident , where one person was sadly killed - it probably made a bigger blip on the journalistic radar because of the family connection to one of the journalistic fraternity....

Re: Getting Started/Putting it into practise!
It's near impossible to correct faults yourself as you only know what you know. I use golf as an example. I can practice till the cows come home but I will not improve unless somebody points out and corrects the faults. I would strongly recommend joining your local IAM or ROSPA group Many IAM group...

Re: Tailgaiters (aggressive drivers behind) - any advise please
Yes, that can be a useful ploy - as can carefully timing our exit from a minor road into a major road. Can work nicely, but I find with junctions more than roundabouts it can fail - especially if you have had to come to a halt. If I wait until I have just enough space to pull our, accelerate briskl...

Re: Tailgaiters (aggressive drivers behind) - any advise please
....and I don't agree with those who say we should pull over and stop for a few minutes, and let the tailgater past - and I've had that advice from an HPC member! Why should I sacrifice my own progress just to give an easier time to an idiot if I can cope with his idiocy by other means? Because... ...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather
... This is why I don't like the proposal for only ADIs to be allowed to take learners on motorways - aside from my concerns for the long-term future of non-ADI teaching, there's no evident logic to this decision. ... I'm not for one minute saying all ADI's are brilliant but they have taken extra t...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather
I wonder - is the reasoning behind keeping learners off the motorways at the moment based on safety, or traffic flow? There seems to be common agreement that some dual carriageways are at least as challenging as the average motorway (possibly more so, because of short entry/exit slips, e.g. the A1 ...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather
And in terms of steering, as Astraist has pointed out - we can always steer the car from the passenger side. In fact it is by far the most common dual control use with a learner (it isn't just the pedals you know...). Yes, I had to grab the wheel this afternoon in Dorchester at the Top O the Town r...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather
Also, what use will dual controls be? There's no second steering wheel, so lane control won't be assisted. I should think that unexpected and probably heavy braking from the ADI will (almost) never be a good thing on a motorway! And, so far as I'm aware, the dual controls can't be used to stop the ...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather
Lane control is also possible (at least on a passenger car) by reaching out for the driver's hand on the wheel (there is a principle in driver's development not to grab the wheel itself and allowing the driver to submit control to the coach). We are not talking big corrections here.... Interesting ...
