Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

I do believe from the above overtaking example - I have acted in accord with an element of roadcraft, that being… Giving clear information. Having slept on it, I'm less certain that's true. Information only has value if it's received. I would view what you described as an attempt to be courteous, d...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

As the road widened up ahead (about three quarter width) I moved to, distance wise, a following position but out on the offside. I paused in that positioned to be absolutely sure my intended overtaking manoeuvre was going to be safe. As I paused, I activated my indicator and a few seconds later, pi...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

I guess the other side of the coin is to ask what you think they are able to do with the 'information' you've conveyed. I can’t know, perhaps with some imagination I could come up with some thoughts. But what I do believe from the above overtaking example - I have acted in accord with an element of...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

Gareth: I should still like to better understand the thinking ... ⋅ from the time of crossing the line in moving out, to point of having passed, who benefits from the continued signalling? ⋅ in your opinion, is this how it should always be done? [/quote] Absolutely not, I also re...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

On a more general note I can't help feeling that you are massively overanalysing things and looking for absolutes where none exist. On the contrary, please refer to the final paragraph of my original post. As a result of posing questions and counter arguments, the thread has been further enriched a...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

Once I have moved offside the indicator seems to me to serve no further purpose. It must have been a wonderful experience for you both to be coached by John Lyon. You both (Gareth) are trenchant in your opinion upon this and I can understand... you are invested and it makes sense to you both. I'm c...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

... a quickly catching vehicle ... to let the other person know what I'm intending. If they've chosen to ignore it, I've bidden my time but, if there is a sign they're willing to wait for me to get on with it, then I've felt free to cancel the indicator and move out so that I can see if it's safe t...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

Gareth Forgive me, rather than dissect out snippets of text I shall just reply to your post towards me. Actually, in the book John Lyon advocates cancelling the (intention to overtake) indicator when overtaking on a multilane carriageway before the wheels cross the lane division line system. Ergo, a...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

When I read this, I thought to advocate procedurally cancelling the indicator at the aforementioned moment, is not encouraging the driver to use the indicator with intelligence and logic in any situation. Horse, I discovered the JL book purely by chance but before purchasing it, I searched the auth...

Re: Use of Indicator for Overtaking

akirk - excellent post! Same hymn sheet...

When I coach (bikes), I refer to the indicator as a communicator - get the language correct and it will convey more than if used in a perfunctory manner.
