I have just noticed this smiley: :gear:
When I was first learning to drive, I would move the steering wheel from side to side (gently) because I had seen it on films. You know the ones, when there is a screen in the background to make it look as though they are driving.

My first car was a 1933 Austin Seven bought just after my L test in 1960 for ten pounds. Took the test in my father's 1957 Vauxhall Victor. Later that year I sold the Austin Seven for 19 pounds. I too remember driving as a learner my brother's Citroen Light 15. It was as described in an earlier post heavy to drive but it was quite advanced in design.

I learned to drive in a 1967 Hillman Minx, but my first, second and third owned cars were all Mini's. I only owned each of the first two for a matter of months, but the third was a keeper at the time, evolving from a bog standard 848, through an 1100 with decent head, and road cam which, because it kept eating clutches, eventually became a 997 with head, cam, crank and exhaust etc all 'worked'. And yes, one of the first jobs was a set of Cooper 1275 discs to make sure it could stop! Moved on to a GT Escort after that. When I'm next in the attic I'll see if I can find and scan a pic or two.

Happy days :)

Mine was a 1972 Vauxhall Victor FE Estate. I got it in 1982! It was originally white, but resprayed blue by someone unskilled and probably drunk. It was a pile of shite in a constant state of brokendownness. I hate old cars. :vomit:

I did my official learning in a Morris Minor but had pretty extensive practice before in a Fiat 500 and a van modelled on a Vauxhall Viva.
The Fiat was by far the best and you could do clutchless gear changes with ease.
A Triumph Herald I am ashamed to say was the first car I actually bought and paid for myself. The bizarre handling of which taught me valuable lessons :)

Edited to add - my extensive practice included a DAF33 - which was actually not bad to drive, and handled very well. It gave you plenty of practice of 'getting out and getting under' to put the rubber band back on.

It was back in 1963, my parents couldn't drive and I had a 175cc BSA Bantam ostensibly to get me to night school in the next town. My parents were fearful that I would end up as as a statistic so the deal was, you pass the driving test and we buy the car but you are our driver for shopping trips and weekend runs to the seaside. It worked well, at least for me, a new Mini was bought for £520, 4242TF, and the world was my oyster. I still have my membership card for the Cavern Club in Liverpool, acquired at the height of Beatle mania, which was only possible with my mates and the Mini - fond memories.
