if you retook your driving test...

Postby akirk » Thu Dec 03, 2015 7:17 pm

interesting simple study of 12 people retaking a mini version of the driving test:

seems to show that IAM (AD) training helps...

I nudged the curb while parking today. Fail.

"Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, said: “The results of our joint experiment were very interesting. It shows that keeping your skills topped up and knowledge of the Highway Code current is crucial in making safer drivers and riders."

Or do the results beg the question of whether a novice driving test is a suitable test to find out whether experienced drivers are safe?

"The exercise was undertaken to see if the UK’s driving test, which marks its 80th anniversary this year, still meets its objective in allowing only the most competent drivers onto the road."

eh? - that would be retesting those shortly after they passed. Surely it makes a stronger point that retesting should be required as a method to push people into keeping their competency up (and maybe the "experienced" test would be different from the 'L' test, but basic highway code knowledge would be a start).

For me the result is either a nudged kerb or a reasonable length walk to same  The only time I did it perfectly was on my ADI part II. I thought the SE had forgotten all about it as we were 100m from the test centre, but the gentlemen of questionable parentage made me do it into a very tight spot and downhill to boot.

I did get my own back by scaring him shitless on my first check test. There wasn't a repeat... he passed me off to another centre and Se sharpish. I scared the hell out of him as well - I haven't had a check test since.

Amateurs!

(actually I don't nudge the kerb for fear of doing my alloys - I often 'abort' and pull forward again  )

I tell you, if there's one area where the Boxster doesn't flatter the driver, it's parallel parking

Come on, you can't leave it there . . . :)
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

First time round:

Doing braking Mrs Noblett as stooge. Getting her to brake 'firmly' made the SE require a prompt toilet break on completion. By which I mean, he threw the tick sheet at me and ran.

Second one was same stooge but in a BMW M3. Similar result, only he had to go up two storeys and looked a bit peaky by the first floor as he didn't want to wait for the lift to descend.

I'll see if I can do the next one at Millbrook to include a short demo on the Outer Handling. I think I'll be able to scare the third one off, or at least get some unprofessional swearing of the 'Feck, Jaysus' variety (There's another war story there peripherally involving Mr Noblett's repeated inability to correctly navigate to Millbrook)
