This may be old news to some, but something I have just seen referenced on Pistonheads was this diagram from the Guardian:
found in the article here: http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablo ... wales-2010
PDF here: http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/G ... 2_2011.pdf
so transport deaths were 1,970 out of 493,242 deaths in the year - i.e. 0.39% of deaths
are we spending a disproportional amount of money on dealing with deaths on the road statistics... when nearly double the number of deaths was from falls (lets ban steps!) and an increasing number and considerably higher from mental health issues which is a very under-funded area...

Death causes in 2011 (Old news)
Re: Death causes in 2011 (Old news)
Interesting discussion as there is, statistically speaking, a 100% mortality rate for humans (excluding any Schroedinger people who disappear so are indeterminate ).
One of my (many) pet hates is medicos 'saving lives' - really it's only a delay which, as a bonus, gives the opportunity to suffer from something else instead.
H, cheery as ever

Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

It's a fine balance between saving life and delaying death.... And a mine field in every direction.

1,970 transport (wholly) related deaths compared to half a million in total? For some reason I thought it might be higher.

Take out the self-selecting candidates (drink, drugs, stolen vehicles, no license, no seatbelt etc.), and I bet it'd be a lot lower than that too.

Take out those which are essentially 'old age' (and essentially unavoidable) the comparison is different.

Might change the accident stats if DLAC resulted in a coroner's verdict of 'suicide ' . . .

Isn't any death essentially unavoidable ?
