It's a mechanical thing that is doing its stuff whenever the wheels aren't travelling in a straight line (hence some people argue that LSDs compromise handling and make cars more understeery, since the default tendency is to want to keep the car straight).

That’s interesting about the handling. I’ve driven LSD on rear drive cars and generally it feels OK provided extra attention is given to the road surface under the drive wheels before adding power. However some years ago I drove a front wheel drive car with LSD and did not like the handling at all. A more recent drive of another similar car was not as bad but I still did not feel fully comfortable with the handling. Might be just me as I also rarely like using “sports” mode when this is an option as the car feels more natural, that I am in full charge of what the car is doing, without it.

I asked the original question as I was considering whether to order the option of LSD on my next car. Replies have been both interesting and helpful and I have decided not to go down the LSD route.

Thanks Mark. That looks like a date. The latest i heard was that the original order had been damaged beyond repair during shipping from the factory but another had been found in Scotland. This one is being transported down and is due to arrive with the dealer tomorrow with collection by me on Friday. Fingers crossed every thing goes alright this time.

No. Still the same but reverted back to petrol and a GTi version.

Just like me going up a Welsh mountainside. Reminder to self ...must order one of those wings to put on the back.
Some of those drops at the side of the road looked dodgy.
