Driving More Renaults

Postby GTR1400MAN » Sun Jun 25, 2017 4:46 pm

Spent the morning driving some more Renaults.

These ones had a few more wheels than my Clio. ;)

I am sure they were
All unladen.
All autos
And
All off road
Tut tut.

Not at all envious.

Keep shelling out for my licence renewal and medical and not driven in Earnest for about 3 years now since testing the trainers in Bristol Scania and they let me drive a demonstrator.
What a great day out you had then.

Off course off road.

All unladen but a mixture of auto and manual.

The hardest thing was the brakes. Wooden as hell pedal feel ... and then arrrrghhh!

Apart from the artic they were like driving overgrown Transits (the largest thing I'd ever driven before).

I will not say that the guys (truckers) have it easy else it will start a war of blue badge holders.

I was a bit rubbish using 4 over 4 with a dropper and a splitter making 16 gears.

The modern trucks are very expensive and very posh.

I could not brake and change overlap so hard work.

Before my C+E entitlement expired (I'm getting old) I did an afternoon with an LGV school to see if I could still do it.

Threading a full-size trailer through the centre of Bristol was fun, and it all came back fairly well. One thing has changed though - the instructor told me off for double-declutching down the gears.

Apparently the modern way is to use the brakes and gears just like a car, which felt to me like it was asking a lot of the brakes (and the synchromesh).

Oh no not that roundabout at the top of Whiteladies road. Then straight on at Blackboy hill into Westbury road
I could never get across it without some t**t entering too fast aiming for the trailer.
I was sure I was going to fail my Test.
Just as we got there the examiner turned me off left into Combe lane
Wow. Huge sigh of relief.

Well done you too.

(When I conduct the Advanced tests on the HGV,s that is what I ask them to do. Thread there way through City centre and back up the A38 Stokes croft and Gloucester Road)
I love watching the professionals handling the rig and mastering the drive.
