Apple reducing driver distractions

Postby RiK » Tue Jun 06, 2017 10:49 am

Watching Apples developer conference event last night I noticed an interesting development they're introducing in the next version of their mobile OS.

"Do not disturb while driving"

Image

The phone will sense when it's connected to in-car bluetooth and automatically enable their 'do not disturb' mode, preventing calls / messages / notifications from interrupting you, and if you wish sending an automatic response to the sender to let them know you're driving and unable to answer.

As with the existing do not disturb mode, there will be a feature which allows certain callers on a selected list to bypass the feature in case of emergency etc.

Thought that's a great idea.

so it detects when you connect via bluetooth to the in-car telephone and turns off calls?! :D will be a lot of people who won't understand that...
I think it is good to have options - but this is once again dealing with symptoms not root causes - root cause is a driver wanting to know what is going on / keep in touch - I have no issue putting my phone on silent (it lives on silent) and turning it screen down in the car - does the same job, but that is driver choice - a driver who currently chooses to answer texts / calls / instagram / etc. will simply choose to carry on...

interesting to see other trends alongside:

Following a study, young ‘millennial’ drivers made clear that they want their car to express their individual personality – just like everyone else – and being able to share selfies via the Aygo’s reversing camera was their most-requested feature.

Toyota x-touch engineer Flora Poli said: “This is certainly one of the trickier projects I’ve worked on. At first I was worried, because let’s face it, using a reversing camera to takes selfies seems a stupid idea. But if this engages people in what is actually an important and useful safety feature that is available across most of the Aygo range, it is worth it… I think.”

to be fair - difficult to do while driving...

the connectedCam in the Citroen C3 though already connects to social media - Fords can read and send messages... while car manufacturers are adding to the distraction will this really make any difference?

I have no doubt it will be an opt in solution but even if its not optional its only going to work until the user realises that if they do not link to the vehicle Bluetooth the phone will continue to work. result even more people using their phone hand held or some mat be buying Bluetooth head sets

I'd imagine if they decide to enable the feature they'll understand it well enough..

But surely if there's something which can help develop better habits by automatically removing those distractions when you get in the car that can only be a positive step?

Don't be daft! It's not going to make them more likely to use the phones hand-held. If they don't want to use the do not disturb feature, they simply won't enable it.

Or they might even just press the great big "I'm Not Driving" button in the middle of the screen.

Who would'a thunk it.

It never ceases to amaze how many people are so quick to rubbish an idea. There is no panacea to prevent people using a phone at the wheel except perhaps a lifetime ban if caught... but this is as good a start as any other that I have seen.

Yup, my thoughts exactly.

Personally I thought it was a great idea. I use the existing 'do not disturb' mode manually when I'm in the car and it'll be nice to have that turn on automatically for me.

And on only one day a year :(
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

I use the do not disturb mode manually when getting in and out of the car, but as someone said above, it'll be nice to have it enable/disable automatically as I get in and out of the car.

It just means I'm less likely to get in the car and forget to turn the do not disturb mode on, or indeed, forget to turn it off when I've arrived at my destination.

And frankly I would be all for a feature that detects when the phone is in a car which is in motion, and disables all functions except emergency call, unless you solve a simple puzzle that requires many fingers on the screen, meaning it'd be simple enough for a passenger to focus on unlocking the phone, but for the driver, impossible, unless they took their hands off the wheel.

However if you manage to solve said puzzle safely while driving then frankly you should be allowed to use your phone while driving because you will have demonstrated super-human multitasking capabilities.

My Previous Windows phone and Renno megane played a message.

'The person you are calling is driving hold on'.
Then I had a choice if I saw it on hands free.

The latest Windows phone has a 'Driving Mode' which is enabled as soon as you get in.
I can choose to read out Texts and reply or not.
Accept incoming calls or not.
Or voice dial out or not.

OR NOTHING ENABLED and just send a reply or text of my choice :- Driving leave a message or text I will reply later.

I think I can still voicedial out to 101 999 and HAIL etc
It is not WHAT you drive, BUT:-- the WAY that you drive it.
It is not HOW fast you drive, BUT:-- HOW you drive fast.

Cheers Andy
