If was considering that budget, I wonder if I'd spend half on a car (E46 M3 perhaps?) and the rest on doing things with it.

£10k would be enough to generate a lot of motoring memories...

Well said, but I prefer to learn to drive a fast car slow...then learn to drive that same car fast 8-)

the V6 mx5 by rocketeer rocks...but, it brings something which I find puzzling: why do people do not modify their cars more? We like bespoke clothes, made-to-measure, in many other avenues of life. But with cars, we are so risk-averse. If you go to the a reputable tuning house, you often better reliability than stock, because they had to iron the original fault to make their modifications work...plus, this is something that we british people are good at. (see where most F1 teams have their HQ...). And yet....

Because modified bikes/cars (if you declare it) are difficult to insure?

and because a lot of people have no actual interest in what they are driving - why is it that manufacturers are focusing more on autonomous driving / radios that can read your texts / etc. because the driver is more interested in that than the car...

Lots of people /do/ modify their cars. Haven't you been near a McDonald's or Halfords recently?
With Elise's there are probably more modified than not. I wouldn't be surprised if some other models are similar - even early MX5s are likely to have different wheels/suspension etc.
When it comes to engine mods, far fewer people are adept at spannering, and complexity of modern engines also makes it harder for a home mechanic. Unless you've got a large cheque book and a good local specialist, it's likely to be a painful experience. And I don't think there are many genuinely reputable specialists as internet forums would make out. There are a lot of wannabees, or can-do-enough-that-most-can't tell the difference. Look at how many people ruin their cars ride and handling while thinking they have made it "better".

Insurance isn't the hassle it used to be, but it does limit your pool of insurers. Plenty of Elises with non-standard engines (eg type R civic conversion, Audi 1.8Turbo or in one case even a VW R32 engine)

What it does do is seriously limit your resale market, and you almost never get back the value of parts spent, never mind labour.

Perhaps the MX5 should be a little more raw in basic form?
What you will have is (rust aside...but do not underestimate this) is a decent and uncomplicated car that is mechanically sound; even the hood worhs properly and easily and is pretty much watertight.
That's the thing about these cars I suppose; there are very few 'knacks' or things to get used to. The thing can be driven just as it is.
If it is of interest the heater is amazing and can melt your shoes. It warms in less than a mile.

Couldn't agree more. If I get the mx5, I intend to rust-proof the underside for peace of mind and resale value-ish. That particular has a modified clutch though, which is very on-off, and would need a bit of time to get used to it...but I like that, because it forces you to have 'rhythm' with your gear-changes.

I like how the mx5 produced way more reactions than the 911s...

That's because MX5s reach a much wider audience.

If it were a Porsche, I'd quite like an older 911 - from about '88 on, so including 964s, and up to 993s. The alternative that would bring a smile to my face whenever I drove it would be an e39 M5, or maybe a 540i. Mind you, I'd still quite like a GTV6 in good enough condition to be driven.

I prefer a fairly standard car for a few reasons. I'm not at all interested in changing a car to make it look different, and I reckon many cheaper modifications make a car worse to drive, both in terms of feel and actual performance (or handling). Finally, I think my preferred insurer isn't all that welcoming of modified cars, and the policy cover they offer is more important to me than modifications would be.

If I were to get an MX5 I would be tempted, though, to ask StressedDave's advice about suspension.

That saying? Brings back memories of long ago :)
