Yes, I understood that, but then the OP seemed to be arguing strongly that the distinction between "legal" and "guidance" was so important that I gleaned the impression that it was indeed more of a personal question.

What I was actually looking for was some general clarification of the legal status of direction signs and paint, other than the three mandatory ones in the highway code, that my usually very good Googling skills had failed to find. This RAB was a good example to aid the discussion. Some do go left from the right hand lane. It's not an issue on a motorcycle as you can blend back into the correct lane quite late, easily, as the traffic is rarely nose to tail ... just travelling needlessly slowly.
