Turn left?

Postby GTR1400MAN » Fri Oct 12, 2018 7:09 pm

Here's one to get your teeth into. We haven't had a driving/riding situation question for a while.

Can I turn left here from the right hand lane without doing a 360 round the roundabout?

"Drive" along the dual carriageway and tell me what paint/signs says I can't.

Depends on the legal status of arrows on road. I have heard they are not mandatory, but turning left (straight on-ish) would piss people off. Particularly any edjits in the LH lane deciding to go right ...

The intention is clear, shame they didn't burn off the old road markings tho'.

But the A12 is still 2 lanes at the roundabout exit.

I thought using paint to restrict traffic through junctions and r'bouts was restricted to Essex

As you near the roundabout, there are old and worn road markings that contradict the new ones

The worn out marking show both lanes for turning right not left as per opening question.

Personally it would depend. If the right hand lane had a much shorter queue then my plan A would be use that and if safe to take the first exit then do it is a broken line dividing the lanes. if not I would do a 360 and still be quicker than waiting in the left lane.

I use this junction most mornings https://goo.gl/maps/H75HH6M7c642
Surprising the number of drivers using lane one to go straight on and get upset when someone drives across the bows

Yes.
Looks like the old layout was a nightmare. Letting a vehicle turn right from the left hand lane. On a DC.

Now, would you do it with Plod behind........

Legally and according to the road markings yes you can - it may be the reaction of other road users that needs to be taken into account.

OK let me stoke the fire a little. :)

In my head I remember being told that direction arrows on the road are "only paint" unless:

a) one of the three compulsory ones in the HWC
b) backed up with signs

Now a) are these 3

Image

Does it have to be the exact words? I think it does. This junction's right arrow has the words "Woodbridge Only"

For b) What signs? White ones? Green ones? This junction has a green one. See HERE
