not uncommon - there was a time when in Swindon one of the roads from the magic roundabout was 30mph in one direction and 40mph in the other :D

Heinz 57 :)

The truth is that in these mixed cases we will never know as no-one is likely to get a ticket for speeding on a curved piece of road. Personally as it is part of a dual carriageway intersection I'd treat it as dual.

You are heading towards London on the M4: At what point does the 40mph speed limit end?

Well that's a mess. 40 coming in that way but nowhere else. A483 become NSL with a proper sign. A48 continues for ages with no NSL sign to be seen. NSL implied by joining motorway heading onto M4.

I wonder if those 40 signs were put in when the traffic lights were installed and nobody thought about the exits?

The R/A used to be NSL:

So coming off/entering the A48 was OK - they've forgotten some signs after it changed to 40?

But what about the exit one before the M4, the A48? Clearly should be NSL, but no repeaters for 40, or 40 sign joining RAB, or NSL leaving RAB.

I agree. There is obviously a missing NSL sign at the exit of the RB. That stretch is signed NSL coming the other way.

But that's not what was asked. The question was specifically about travelling to London on the M40. :)

Or maybe not?

'Drive' a little further and it says Dual Carriageway Ahead. So does the Two Way Traffic sign trump the motorway sign?

Interestingly this is how the Dual Carriageway section is signed as you come the other way using the off slip road and not as Dual Carriageway Ahead.

I was expecting one of these as well.

'Cos speed limit signs of <70 are never used on motorways? I've seen plenty of places where joining the motorway at e.g. 50 limited slipway is later repeated on the motorway. Presumably this means that between joining the motorway and the repeater for 50, the speed limit is actually ("implied") 70 ?
