Nigel.

This seems to be a fairly recent development and combined with the almost total lack of coherent diversion signs causes no end of confusion. You can also get these road closed ahead signs many miles from the actual road works and have no idea if it will actually impact you. And to further compound the problem as the coning and barrier installation is usually contracted out, these signs can be put in place many days before work actually commences.

Many times if you ignore the signs you can actually get through! On the motorcycles this is even more true, though the other year we got caught out. We rode for several miles as the number of Road Closed signs increased. We continued on, only to be met by a true closure of a small bridge. As we practised our slow riding technique and did 180 degree turns we were greeted with a hand written sign on the back of the official one ... "We told you it was closed!" :D

Yes, we use that site. The road works we hit today

Zoom out and you'll see the huge diversion. We ignored it and cut round in a very small clockwise rectangle if you take the first turning before the blockage (heading North).

Isn't it actually an offence to ignore a red road closed sign?

Nigel.

Probably is. Points? Fine?

But I said ...

And I was talking about the Road Closed AHEAD, as in the first post. ;) So when you arrive where the road is supposed to be closed, it mysteriously isn't.
