Cutting Corners - Major to Minor

Interesting article in the ROSPA magazine this morning (so interesting they sent me two copies in two separate envelopes!) It's about turning right off a major road into a minor road and using some of the 'wrong' side of the minor road, going across the paint. No guidelines given, just the question "What would you do?"

So, what would you?

I should have ruled that as not a valid answer :)

I know what I'd do in various situations. Interested in what others do. Seems to be the 'game' Stu Bullock (ROSPA motorcycle training manager) is playing.

Shame no one can find the IAM Forum topic on this exact subject in the ether.
If it benefits the drive/ride and does not affect other road users then why not? I think the example used in the old IAM days was of a Y junction - it would have been physically more demanding to comply than cut. The HC reference is good advice for people who can't make the necessary observations. A bit like the advice on signalling.

If I've the view then I'll use the extra part of the road to turn in earlier with less off a sharp turn. What annoys me is when I'm waiting in the minor to turn right and vehicles on the major (turning right) stop and either flash or wave me animatedly to come out because they are incapable of turning a steering wheel. Meantime vehicles behind them are passing on the waiting vehicle's left meaning it is not safe for me to come out. This results in the driver of the waiting vehicle getting annoyed and waving me out, this time angrily. If only someone would devise a series of painted lines that would control this by defining priority/order! :(

This ^^.

If I have the view and there is no vehicle approaching in the side road then I may cut, otherwise it's strictly by the book and use only my own side of the road. It is a personal bugbear that I am often forced to brake and stop short at the end of my road due to people turning right from the priority road and simply not bothering to look into the junction before committing to cut the corner. :bash:

And a motorcycle high view on approach reveals the modern bane of driving
