A few years ago there was an article in the Driving Instructor written by Dougie Minors, head of Police driver training for Devon and Cornwall Police, giving advice on dealing with emergency vehicles. I distinctly remember it saying that emergency service drivers do not have an exemption to cross a solid white centre line. The advice to drivers was to continue driving within the speed limit and pull in when safe to do so where there are no solid centre lines.

Quite correct, they don't (read more in the linked page). But that doesn't mean they can't ;)
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.
