Oh yes, sport mode would resolve the issue as it won't allow the revs to drop below 4,500 but that's not really ideal for normal driving and might be frowned upon on my observed drives with IAM :o)

4,500 ! :o Does sound quite basic form of sport mode.

I used normal, sport, auto and manual on my test ... just where appropriate.

As has slready been made clear different cars respond differently. I think that what the OP says he does in his car is fine. Most sensible examiners will be pleased if you explain the reasons for doing it a particular way in your car, providing the result is safe and smooth.

I suggest that you have to be prepared to drive different cars differently so you should not worry about the effect on your driving of manual cars.

I still drive the the family Yaris which is manual. Added benefit of driving a dual clutch ... I now don't declutch as often as I used to un-necessarily. The downside is the odd time I forget to declutch coming to a stop and I'm reminded by a little engine judder. Not stalled it so far! ;)

Thanks waremark. my current observer does not disagree, it's just a talking point and interestingly, she also mentioned that as long as I talk my reasons through with an examiner, that would show my thought process and the reason.

As for the sport mode on my Audi, yes it is basic but that keeps it in the ideal revs for start of the power band in each gear. I don't use it.

While not related to the original question I thought I'd share these here.

An amazing Meccano DCT model controled by an old laptop and Qbasic. (some people have too much time, and skill, on their hands).

Then this page which contains some history of dual clutch boxes and some more info on the model. I was amazed to read that the dual clutch gearbox was originally thought of, and made, in 1939 by Andolphe Kegresse. Modern electronics have made it a viable reality.

That is brilliant. I'd love to see it close up! But doesn't DSG stand for "dual shaft gearbox"?

"Direct-Shift" according to Wiki:

DCT - Dual Clutch Transmission - Generic

DSG - Direct Shift Gearbox - Audi/VW

EDC - Efficient Dual Clutch - Renault

PDK - Porsche Doppel Kupplungs - Porche

I'm sure there are others. Manufacturers like to have their own name for them.

Pleased to hear you have a sensible Observer! (which I hope I am too).
