I admit I don't like the term "hinting" for a couple of reasons. To begin with, it sounds like a nudging action of the wheel seperate to the actual steering input - so there is a change in the rate of steering (or a pause alltogether) between the hinting motion and starting to steer for the corner.
Hinting is about giving the tyres time to develop slip angles and cornering force. Starting to steer incorprates that seemlessly, but is also down to the fact that drivers simply start to steer too late, around about the point where the road starts to bend or later.
By thinking in terms of "starting to steer" you are, in effect, decoupling steering from line choice, so you can start to steer very far down the road before the corner, without forcing the car unto an early apex line through the corner, and you can take a very late apex line without nessecarily having to chunk the car into it.
