Start to steer? I thought I'd seen a mention in a thread 'elsewhere' of this but can't see it. Is there education on this available? I thought late apex was often helpful... I'm probably missing something.

Start to steer - steering is progressive, start early and minutely to give the tyres time to take up a turning shape, and progressively add steering until you have enough. If you have to unwind a bit of steering, or add more in a hurry, something could have been done better. But don't allow starting to steer early to prevent you from holding the nearside deep into right hand bends until you have a view. You must not turn in so early that you would meet an oncomer in the middle of the road.

No doubt others will explain it differently.

Sometimes known as "hinting".

I admit I don't like the term "hinting" for a couple of reasons. To begin with, it sounds like a nudging action of the wheel seperate to the actual steering input - so there is a change in the rate of steering (or a pause alltogether) between the hinting motion and starting to steer for the corner.

Hinting is about giving the tyres time to develop slip angles and cornering force. Starting to steer incorprates that seemlessly, but is also down to the fact that drivers simply start to steer too late, around about the point where the road starts to bend or later.

By thinking in terms of "starting to steer" you are, in effect, decoupling steering from line choice, so you can start to steer very far down the road before the corner, without forcing the car unto an early apex line through the corner, and you can take a very late apex line without nessecarily having to chunk the car into it.

Neither do I and have often found that most people can be very wrong :)

I prefer the slightly more pointed DILLIGAF rather than IDCWMPT. It's more of a IDCWAET - I don't care what anyone else thinks.

I'll post up more about cornering at lunchtime.

Well, this thread has shown me just how complex steering is!

My method has always been to:
Step 1: Gauge severity of corner, and slow down to an appropriate speed.
Step 2: Turn the steering wheel in such a manner that I remain on the tarmac.
Step 3: Continue driving.

And how are you managing the first part of that?
