Skill & Safety

Postby Horse » Mon Dec 10, 2018 5:32 pm

One of the many  perks I have @work is to 'borrow' someone else's copy of 'Intelligent Instructor' magazine. [They wouldn't read it anyway #NoGuilt and I put it on the shelves for anyone else to read]

New issue just out, where one article includes the comment:

"Safety is a by-product of a high level of skill" Hmmm . . . doesn't that depend on the skill?

And later: "So if we focus purely on skills, and being the most skilled driver we can be, it seems that the safety side can look after itself".

I know what was meant (and it was talking about dropping the term 'safety' to be replaced by 'skilled' in order to enthuse younger drivers. But as a blanket message, it needs to be used with care.
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

Has someone not heard of the GDE Matrix? That says pretty much the opposite.
