Car Safety in South America

An interesting article here:
http://safety.trw.com/south-america-slo ... fety/0804/
mainly focusing on Brazil due to the author's specific knowledge.

In Brazil – the largest market in Latin America and fourth largest in the world, with 3.6 million light vehicles sold in 2012 – global manufacturers tend not to advertise the safety attributes of their products to drive sales. Crash tests conducted by Latin NCAP (set up in 2010 with facilities at ADAC in Germany) on some of the top-selling cars in South America, showed that the most popular established compact models are, in safety terms, about 20 years out of date compared with cars sold in Europe, North America or Japan, according to global standards set by the United Nations. Of the 28 cars tested, covering 12 brands, none received a five-star rating and nearly half were evaluated at two stars (two models) or just one star (another nine) and one received no stars. Six were rated at three stars and ten achieved a four-star rating.
