Road pricing . . . ?

GPS linked, by class of road / route, time of day, etc.
Your 'standard' is how you drive alone, not how you drive during a test.

That would seem to be the logical conclusion. It has been proposed previous but I think we're getting to the point where technology can now make it possible. The argument fore was that you obviously only pay for what you use - It then all depends on the tariff(s) set? The downside is that we'd all need some form of 'Black Box' fitted - Big Brother..!

There was also discussions around scrapping Road Tax and putting the duty on the fuel at the pump. Similar result in that you pay for what you use with the added benefit/snag being that the more inefficient your vehicle, the more fuel you use, the more duty you pay... and it can't dodged like Road Tax. This obviously wouldn't work for all electric vehicles but could potentially be OK in the medium term.

I do keep a keen eye on the electric car market; there is a lot in the pipeline from more mainstream and European manufacturers over the next 18-24 months and, with competition, we'll see falling prices. Having driven a Tesla Model S and watched the progress of the Model 3 with interest, I'd happily move to electric (not necessarily a Tesla) and then a 'pay for what you use' form of Road Tax would seem better than some arbitrary sum that you have to pay upfront regardless of when and how often you use the car

But electric only vehicles don't pay road tax and nor did most hybrids

Many vehicles now fitted as standard with e-call type systems, so presumably already have GPS installed.

Could be an interesting conversation with the partner - "who was in the car with you........you said you were going to a meeting.........alone.......?"

At the moment, no... I was thinking further down the line as Road Tax diminishes from diesel/petrol fuel the Government will turn their attention to other (currently free) revenue streams i.e. electric and hybrid vehicles. We ain't going get away with it scott free..!
