not on all cars - perhaps the standard fwd euro boxes...
but I am going through a set of rears roughly each year on the z3
I would love them to die of old age instead :)

Given that my car wears its front tyres faster than the rears I move the part worn rear tyres to the front axle and put new tyres on the back when the fronts reach the limit. I only need to buy two tyres at a time but I would struggle to work out what the wear rates are or tyre life is, especially as I am swapping summer and winter tyres on and off as well.

Only if one is foolish enough to never put new tyres on the rear :-) :P

Sounds like a lot of faffing about to me.

I put new tyres on the rear when the old ones wear out.

I am under the impression that new tyres should be put on the rear; can you explain your train of though a bit please.

With a FWD car I would avoid putting very worn front tyres on the the rear lack of tread and lack of weight could make the back very unstable in damp conditions, Maybe if they are 40-50% worn then it would make sense even up the wear and replace the whole set together.

True, but than I wouldn't put worn tyres on any axle. The good tyres belong on all the wheels.

And again, I find that by the time tyres become worn, they are already well past the their prime in terms of braking (and cornering) capability, which is in itself reason enough to replace them well in advance of becoming worn.

Me too, hence my comment :bash:

I quote advice from tyre companies but follow advice from StressedDave, happily they are the same.

it must depend on the car must it not?
the z3 has different tyres front and back - quite different, as do a number of more sporty cars, so that is an obvious exception...
then would it make a difference if the car is FWD / RWD / 4x4 / ???
