For rawness, I'd have assumed that the Honda Civic Type R would be on top. Maybe you should test drive both...Actually, me think you may even want to add the Mustang to that lot, while you are it.

Civic is under consideration but I do like the ability that 4wd, albeit not full time, has.
Mustang, no.

What benefits of 4wd do you enjoy? Personally, I have never felt the need, except in severe winter conditions.

By your reference to 'not full time' are you implying that the Focus does not use full time 4wd? I understood that its innovative system from GKN is full time. It also includes active torque vectoring without use of the brakes, and can deliver up to 70% of maximum torque to the rear wheels, and of that up to 100% to each side. I believe it routinely delivers torque to the rear to eliminate understeer.

By the way, when I drove the car, it just felt good, I was not at all aware of what was going on underneath. I have not experienced drift mode!

Looks like I might have to examine the Focus drivetrain in greater detail than I have. Thanks.
The benefits of 4wd that I have come to enjoy?
Pulling out of junctions and applying lots of acceleration, just being able to hit the pedal, 80mph in third gear on icy roads with wheelspin but the car just continuing in a straight line.
See, you've pushed me even more towards paying above list for the Focus.

I am a bit surprised by your 80 mph on icy roads. On icy roads a 4wd car will take just as far to stop as a 2wd car. I would find that the limiting factor for speed. The greatest difference will be due to the type of tyres, with winter tyres making more difference than 4wd.

As to pulling out of junctions, I find that even when driving 4wd cars I don't take advantage. I am firmly indoctrinated into accelerating progressively, with full power not applied until straight or nearly so. Perhaps I will have the opportunity to play rather more with my son's Focus RS.

Place and time, I'm well aware of that which you describe.

Still a decision to make, CTR now available new with more than £2k off, Focus RS negotiating with private sellers.

Problem now resolved, picked up a cancelled Focus RS order with a dealer group local to me.
Spec I wanted, apart from colour, then it's "the" colour.
List price, currently in build and will have it mid January next year.
