Ireland - do an AD course to remove points?

Fianna Fáil is proposing that motorists could have penalty points wiped from their licence if they undertake a special refresher course.
The opposition party is expected to launch the plan as part of its election manifesto.
Drivers who notch up more than six penalty points would be able to do a day-long course which the motorist would pay for themselves.
If they complete it successfully, they could have as many as three points expunged.

An interesting concept - carrot as well as stick - points to punish, and carrot to remove them through an AD course
like the idea!

In Spain you get 12 points on your licence to start with and they are removed, by degrees, for infractions with a higher loss for new drivers.
Those who do not have points removed for 3 years get another three added.
There is no automatic disqualification for drinking or drugged driving depending on the degree (the limits of either are much less than in the UK). If repeated however there are compulsory anti drug/drink regimes.
What little tolerance there is for speeding offences (7 percent) is widely published - makes it less of a guessing game.
It is as you say carrot and stick and I believe the UK could learn something from it.

Isn't it no different to the UK where you pay to go on a course to avoid being given points in the first place?

And why do we need to catch people to make them see the value of courses? All it leads to is an industry that wants ever tighter restrictions (and more people caught) which in turn feeds their training.

In the UK other than at Christmas the only points you are likely to receive are from speed cameras, most of which are bright yellow and registered on sat-nav devices.
