I often slip my car into sport mode when approaching RABs a simple flick of the selector to the left and stop start is killed off. I find it much safer. Like some one else has commented it is possible to keep the engine running using 3 stage braking on my auto but I find the sport mode more reliable
One of the selling point for my present and previous car is Rear wheel drive i much prefer it unfortunatly ( possibly through too much sport+ Mode) rear tires last around 16K and are £200 each but much more fun to drive :-)

FiL had a Focus automatic *shudder*

On a family outing I usually had chauffeur duties. One day he noticed that I was doing something and asked what?

By default, the overdrive was 'on', so I used to switch it off approaching corners, then back on after.

These things are an amazing PITA when you pick up a hire car at an airport and try to get started, find your way out of a multistory and negotiate half a dozen roundabouts before getting onto the motorway ....
