If I were Google, or any body else developing self-driving cars right now; I wouldn't be too happy with Tesla...

Yeah...hardly surprising. First of many I'm afraid.

Kind of depressing (although inevitable) that the focus is on the Tesla failing to brake rather than why the truck driver pulled across someone coming towards them

Difficult to identify the cases where autopilot has avoided a serious accident which would have been suffered if driving had been left to the human in the driving seat.

When using cruise control I am always ready to disengage it. How different is it when using the Tesla system?

Tesla guidance is that you should always be ready to re-take control. Allegedly if you don't [when it asks you to], it then gently slows the car down and steers to the side of the road. There is youtube footage of people asleep at the wheel of a tesla on autopilot.

It's not really so different to the [apocryphal?] stories of people setting cruise control in their motor homes then going back to make a cup of tea It doesn't matter how good the technology is, people always find ways to act more stupidly

...or why Joshua Brown, the driver of the Tesla, failed to take control.

I can just see a huge lawsuit looming ...with Tesla feeling the brunt of it.

Pretty sure that Tesla are covered as far as being very specific about their cars not being autonomous, but assisting the driver - i.e. driver bearing ultimate responsibility - I seem to recall they had a number of issues when they uploaded software updates giving autonomous abilities without warning owners first - and they made some changes to their position at that point...

however, very difficult PR to say that the dead person is at fault yet their car which claims to handle a number of scenarios failed - especially as this specific driver had posted a number of videos to youtube on autonomous use of the car including I believe at least one tweeted by Musk... it is a complex situation for lots of reasons!

Oh, it is complex. Just look to commercial flying for how much so.
Boils down to, which system rules and when should the other intervene.
