We do not have this system of readily recognised places where all road users can anticipate pedestrians may be crossing and a vehicle may need to give way.

When we do have safe crossing places pedestrians still choose not to use them because they have to walk 25 yards further.

There is a crossing very near my house close to a children's centre that is much safer than the place many choose to cross literally it is the other side of a junction but has far better views and traffic light controlled.

Isn't the HC signal for turning left to use your right arm, moving it in a circle from the shoulder ? https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway ... road-users

So the "putting right hand up to turn left" is half right ...

that is for car drivers though while driving cars with no indicators, can't think of a reason a cyclist would use such a signal...

The fact remains that we provide very few places where all road users may expect either to cross or find people crossing; those places we have are restricted to a very few expensive crossings.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that people are not going to walk hundreds of yards to find one of these rarities :)
The town I live in has a population of around 50,000 yet there are only four controlled crossings and two, presumably lonely, zebra type crossings several miles apart.
