Handheld camera use while driving :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :bash:

Maybe a rival AV ;) - and anyway it's AZ, which is where Uber went due to less restrictions than CA: So it's probably perfectly acceptable there

Just because it might be legal doesn't mean it's any less braindead than the AV that caused the original problem :hit:

Err... it wasn't me! (I thought that was obvious). However brain-dead it is, that doesn't lessen its role as evidence that the Uber / AZ police-released video does not accurately reflect how dark it wasn't on that road. Somehow the latest tech available on the Uber car's video is of poorer resolution and ability to distinguish objects than some random (as you say, brain-dead) driver with a hand-held 'phone. That (for me) smells of an attempt to excuse themselves and blame the victim.

As per http://bristolcars.blogspot.co.uk/2018/03/the-uber-dev-team-just-killed-someone.html
Without waiting for any analysis, police and others are already saying "it wasn't uber's fault". That's the wrong way to view it
.

I thought this myself, so I fiddled with the contrast settings on my laptop screen and was able to pick out the pedestrian much earlier than was possible to see in the normal video.

I wouldn't be surprised if Uber has indeed darkened the video a tad just to make it seem...less at fault.

Last week's news:
26 March
Robohub wrote: Police have indicated that the accident has been referred for criminal investigation, and the NTSB is also present.
The family (only a stepdaughter is identified) have retained counsel, and are demanding charges and considering legal action.

Plus a fairly comprehensive breakdown of what likely broke (and what should and what shouldn't matter).

Video of the crash showed that Herzberg crossed a few lanes of traffic before reaching the lane where the Uber car was driving. The car's "lidar and radar sensors—which don't depend on ambient light and had an unobstructed view—should have spotted her in time to stop,"

Initial NTSB report out:
https://www.ntsb.gov/news/press-release ... 80524.aspx

I find this section particularly worrying
"According to Uber emergency braking maneuvers are not enabled while the vehicle is under computer control to reduce the potential for erratic vehicle behavior. The vehicle operator is relied on to intervene and take action. The system is not designed to alert the operator."

It also disconnects the manufacturers safety systems while the car is in computer controlled mode.

"The vehicle operator is relied on to intervene and take action. The system is not designed to alert the operator."

It's totally pointless then.

Possibly the opposite!

The system learns from those occasions where the safety driver intervenes.

Don't Tesla have autopilot permanently running in 'shadow' mode, comparing it's decision with the drivers and reporting back to base?

Or it "learns" that everyone else gets out the way of someone driving inattentively/badly
