THREE years after the new-look police and crime plan for Gloucestershire was launched, its first locally-based initiative which was funded to help young drivers is to be expanded nationwide.

The Pathfinder project is run by The Under 17 Car Club Charitable Trust in partnership with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. The aim is to cut the road casualty rate amongst novice drivers who have a disproportionate risk of death or serious injury in road traffic collisions and is based on more than 40 years’ experience of educating novice drivers.

According to Department for Transport research, taking part in the Pathfinder Project reduces the risk of a young driver being involved in a crash from the national average of one in four to one in 17.

The programme is managed and run by volunteers with many years’ experience with the Under 17 Car Club and works to Roadcraft standards that are adapted for novices. The approach we take minimises the cost while working towards the highest standards of driving.

Is this maybe one of the ways forward for getting Advanced Driving out there - introduce it as a part of initial training and teach new learners that this is the level of driving they should expect

Yes-ish.

It will be necessary to have clearly demonstrable 'levels' or distinctions, and proven benefits.

Now, there's a couple of catering-sized cans of worms

Followed by a fair question of: "So why aren't learners taught like this from the start?" :lol:

We had the Chairman of the U17CC at our local RoADAR meeting on Monday talking about this. Currently it's only running in Gloucestershire, but they're hoping for more. They are sponsored by the PCC - it can't be run completely as a self-funding exercise. The feedback from the participants was universally very positive.

The U17cc were featured at the recent IAM national conference. One of the 6 delegate 'workshops' was run by them and jolly good it was too. Their chief instructor is now a paid employee of the IAM (his position is Southern Regional Quality Manager) and on brief encounter Shaun seemed like a great chap. I know the IAM are looking to develop close links with the U17cc for the benefit of both - I hope they (the IAM) maximise the chance the make a great partnership.
