The old place used to send you an alert e-mail if you had a PM awaiting your attention. Would it be possible to set up this facility on 'ere as well?

Click
here and put a tick in the left column (Email) for "when someone sends you a private message" at the bottom. Check you have specified the correct email adddress
here too!

Have tried to send a pm today but it remains in the outbox, not in the sents, not sure what I'm doing wrong
?

Nothing. It remains in the outbox until the recipient reads it (or in the case of a PM to multiple recipients, the first person to read it).
