I did HGV3 - HGV2 - HGV1 in the army. Then did a bit of international driving.

All great fun - in recent years I have done the Australian equivalent - HR - Heavy Rigid (3+ axles) and HC - Heavy Combination (Articulated or heavy trailer). I have absolutely no need to do it but I am soon to do MC - Multi Combination (B-doubles and Road Train) just for the experience.

Not so much fun now that most trucks have auto or auto-manual gears - I still prefer the Roadranger crash boxes.

I like driving HGVs, I find it good fun, but I don't do it for a living!

As for taking a day's instruction then a test, it depends on what experience you have of driving large vehicles and your knowledge of the test. It also depends on if you can get the use of a suitable vehicle to use for a test.

I had taken a PCV course prior to taking an HGV test so driving a rigid was easy. The +E bit was harder as I had to learn how to couple and uncouple for the test.

As I have said, it depends on you experience.
