Re: 20mph alternatives

Do you have any form of Community Speedwatch involvement with your local constabulary? i.e. a group of volunteers who are trained in the use of a handheld speed monitoring device and who from time to time will measure the speed of vehicles passing through. Those over the speed limit are noted and re...

Re: latest speed cameras

You are right of course. There is no easy answer and as much as I would like to have Darth Vader like powers to control offenders I am resigned to the fact that I will have to live with simply avoiding them.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: Speed limit compliance

2) What does "free flowing traffic" mean? They appear to define that in the paper as: "Free flow speed Free flow speeds are observed in locations where external factors which might restrict driver behaviour (for example junctions, hills, sharp bends and speed enforcement cameras) are...

Re: latest speed cameras

The lowest hanging fruit is to stop giving licences back to people who have clearly displayed no appreciation of the privilege. i.e. if someone is banned then make it for a meaningful period and then require an extended test to get it back. Also do not allow people to plead hardship when about to b...

Speed limit compliance

If you want to know just how many people do, or do not, comply with speed limits, which ones, and in which class of vehicle, then you can have a dig around in here and make yourself go nuts. https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/vehicle-speed-compliance-statistics-for-great-britain-2022/vehicle-s...

Re: latest speed cameras

But 'not paying attention'? I think that's too simplistic. The relevant chapters in the book do give a much more granular breakdown. Certainly too much to cover here. [*] I'd argue there are some easy options but they are vote losers and will never fly. Try us anyway ;) The lowest hanging fruit is ...

Re: latest speed cameras

However, if we take it at face value, but say focus on the other 75%, what are they? I don't have the book to hand right now but it's an interesting read and definitely worth picking up a copy. ETA: got it. I'm not here to press home the well-worn and boring road safety messages we're all aware of ...

Don't know about the population here but this sign is regularly updated.

Ashdown Forest

It read 200 when I passed it today and was over 200 only a few weeks ago.

Re: latest speed cameras

“It comes after the news that one in four fatal collisions on UK roads happens because of speeding.“ And ignores the corollary that three out of four fatal collisions do not happen because of speeding. I'm not convinced that's even true. Reg Local's book How Not To Crash goes through all of the rec...

Re: Unsigned speed limits

There’s sometimes painted road markings between the invisible signs where the limit reduces, but they are easy to miss. What's the legality/enforcement of these? I thought they were to back up the roundels, but in themselves have no legal meaning? (I've seen instances where they conflict with round...
