Re: 20 MPH limits
I honestly don't have a problem with these limits. That's quite a blanket statement - all 20 limits, all of the time, everywhere they are implemented? I take your point and will qualify what I typed. The 20 limits where they help protect the most vulnerable road users, then yes I agree. Or, if they...

Re: Mobile phones
I don't disagree that the technology can create hazards, but I do believe that it is possible to use it positively and safely. But the problem is, that the majority of the driving don't. Nigel. Or do they? Vast numbers use mobile phones, most don't crash. Already answered in this thread: if compare...

Re: Mobile phones
It's not my personal experience...it's university research using 'ordinary' drivers. How do you know you're not effected? You did draw on your own experience. I therefore drew on mine. I never suggested I am not affected, The debate is about the extent of the effect and whether it is safely managea...

Re: Mobile phones
Some studies (using scenarios in car simulators) show measurable deterioration in basic driving skills like: ⋅ poor lane keeping ⋅ poor speed control ⋅ slow reaction times and ⋅ poor anticipation ...when the driver is using a mobile phone. Don't get hung up o...

Re: Mobile phones
My point, and I think it is the one that really divides the two 'factions' here, is not that hands-free is absolutely neutral with regard to driving safety, but that it is possible to recognise and minimise the hazards involved and thus maintain safety. Furthermore, mobile phone use in general and ...

Re: Mobile phones
You are absolutely correct and I would probably support treating hands-free the same as hand-held too. The only problem is that it would get even less compliance than hand-held has now so it would be pointless. Have you considered why hands-free is not included in the legislation? Could it, perhaps...

Re: Mobile phones
I am really confused by the paragraph which begins: "Two studies using epidemiological methods have reported that cell phone use while driving is associated with approximately a quadrupling of crash risk." I understood it to say that the studies both looked only at people who had just had ...

Road Safety Week tips from IAM Roadsmart
I hope IAM will not mind me copying and pasting this section. Seems quite good to me. What do others think? Slow down around schools and in residential areas. This may not be rocket science but it’s easily forgotten whilst rat running on the morning commute. If you want to be on time simply leave ea...

Re: Mobile phones
How far are you willing to stretch credibility in an effort to justify phone use. WG's statement above is correct. You do not NEED to communicate while driving. You choose to do it because it is a convenience for you and you are prepared to accept the added risk. Why not just say that instead of th...
