Re: Driving in Africa

In South Africa the main arterial roads are tarmac but other roads can be compacted dirt roads that develop corrigations due to suspension / damper frequencies especially after heavy rain.

I can't remember having any issues when I worked in SA for year.

Re: Pavement Parking

I live in an outer London borough where travelling radially ie in or out of London has good public transport, if over crowded. If you want to travel by public transport in other directions then it's more of a problem. Having lived in Berlin and Prague for several years you can get practically anywhe...

Re: Diesel now bad?

I think it was a short comment on top gear during the last London bus strikes, the air quality on Oxford Street improved significantly on the days of the strike.
I also remember reading somewhere that the hybrid electric buses did not work

Re: Low Profile Tyres. Why?

My off roader had 255/85/16 tyres, on tarmac you did notice a delay between steering input and actual change in direction. A few weeks ago, at night, I lost two near side tyres on pot holes in my RS6 which runs 255/35/19 tyres, I call them elastic band tyres! The off roader wouldn't have noticed the...

Re: Winter to summer tires

I'm just tyred of all the tyre threads. I'm tired of you going on about it, and tired of you contributing negative or sniping comments to threads which you claim have no interest to you. I wish you'd have the courtesy to let others discuss what interests them without your constant harping. Basicall...

Re: Leaving your car in gear when parked

I'm not a fan of electronic parking brakes, so I would also leave in gear. Old fashioned cable operated handbrake I've never known a complete failure, stretched cable making the brake less effective, yes. But we should be keeping our vehicles up to scratch. Plus you get that resistance as the cable ...

Re: end of a (LR) era...

I've had a lot of muddy, rocky, sandy, snowy and deep water times off roading in Defenders. The ladder chassis, separate body design, suspension and transmission are easy to modify for extreme off roading.
An end of an era in the UK.

Re: Being overtaken while turning.

Following on from Alasdair, early assertve position on the road, indicate letting the flasher repeat min of 3 times to give the following driver time to wake up before showing your brake lights. Progressive braking to a slow steady approach leaving the turn as late as possible to give max view into ...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather

If the pass rate is so low the reasons should be explored and solutions found; even if this means further investment, more than just financial investment, by the pupil and instructor.! Why? Why put more drivers on the road ? Surely we have enough congestion. Yes I know this assumes they won't drive...

Re: Learners - motorways, night, bad weather

Although, typically, motorways have faster moving traffic or congestion in several lanes at once, a pulsing traffic flow and everything mentioned above. The whole process of learning to drive and who performs the instruction probably could do with a thorough overhaul to reflect current and projected...
