It's all very well but, when you throw an oncoming motor vehicle into the mix, then it's bloody hard to see ...

Re: Santa list?

The research results demonstrated that unlike earlier research, road workers were often detected only at short distances, sometimes as low as 25 to 45 meters (27-49 yards). The road workers were also found to be less than conspicuous, even when wearing high-visibility clothing. The workers that wer...

Re: Santa list?

Sure it lights up best in car headlights and if that means I'm seen in the distance, rather than last minute, I think it has a benefit. What do other drivers think? I don't know of any research into HiViz use on the roads which demonstrates a reduction in incident rate or an increase in safety, do ...

Re: Santa list?

That picture nicely illustrates another problem with HiViz when it actually works. The dozy-person's attention is drawn towards the farther rider, away from the nearer. Given that attention is limited, this is bad news for anyone not wearing HiViz. It's a 'beggar thy neighbour' approach in the same...

Re: Cognitive bias and the "thirds" rule

Part of the reason for cognitive bias is that what we see is not so much a result of what impinges on our senses, but results from our predictions about what will be out there. A good read in that area is Andy Clark's 'Surfing Uncertainty: Prediction, Action, and the Embodied Mind '. Predicting corr...

Re: Masters assessment

+1 Plus, he said that there was no point whatsoever in developing observation. All he needed to look at was the distance he could stop in at his speed. so travelling at 30mph, he only needed to know what was happening 75 feet away. Now that explains a lot ... an awful lot! It's an interesting viewp...
