Re: Motorway Hard Shoulders

On the one hand I feel that getting rid of hard shoulders is a backwards move which reduces the safety of motorways, but on the other I see the need to increase motorway capacity and of course we lack the funds to do it properly. I have a specific dislike of the way smart motorways operate. The one ...

Re: Let the games begin ....

Fortunately, many people treat those white circles at roundabout for what they actually are, a pointless inconvenience. So do you advocate following the masses and driving over/ignoring them? When does safety/convenience trump driving legally? (Philosophical question). Stupidity, even when legal, h...

Re: Let the games begin ....

4 way stops are rather inefficient for traffic flow when there is a significant amount of traffic. Personally, when driving in places where they have them, I have been confused about what order we arrived in (the system is that each vehicle enters the junction in the order in which they arrived at t...

Re: Let the games begin ....

What are the situations where a mini RAB helps at a T? If there isn't much traffic on the straight road there is no need. If there is, getting out is still difficult, because drivers on the straight road continue to behave as though they have priority. And when I am on the straight road and steer ro...

Re: First fatal accident for self-driving car

Difficult to identify the cases where autopilot has avoided a serious accident which would have been suffered if driving had been left to the human in the driving seat.

When using cruise control I am always ready to disengage it. How different is it when using the Tesla system?

Re: Driving in Africa

In SA the single carriageway national speed limit on major roads seemed to be 120 kph. Seemed quite enlightened to me.

Re: Censorship and derailment

It would have seemed quite normal to me had the original offending post been moved to a new thread with a comment that that had been done because it represented excessive thread drift. I don't think that would have generated the sort of discomfort which simply deleting it without explanation has do...

Re: EU - where did it go wrong?

Great post from Gareth. However, I think the vote would have been quite different if the campaign and the build up to it had been handled differently. And Cameron deserves to go, he is responsible for most of this. He should never have pretended there was any chance of reducing net immigration. Hilt...

Re: Technology dumbing down?

Apparently there are blind spot warning lights on the (lease) car I'll be picking up in October. My reaction on being told what this system did, was "That is interesting. I've always wondered where the blind spots are with properly set mirrors and a willingness to actually look"; I guess ...
